Music Director

The Phoenix Singers Music Director is Geoff Lavery

GEOFF LAVERY began his professional musical career in Ipswich. From there, he and his family moved to Lancashire and then to Bedford, conducting many Orchestral and Choral performances and musicals. Upon his return to Suffolk seven years ago, he has found himself increasingly busy as a conductor, accompanist and organist.

He conducted Suffolk Strings for three years and regularly works with ‘Music in Felixstowe’ for Children’s Workshops as well as “Come & Sing” performances of a variety of choral works.

He conducts the Gippeswyk Singers, a chamber choir that he founded many years ago. Together with their regular performances in Suffolk, they have given concerts in Holland, Yorkshire and the West Country. As well as a “Last Night of the Proms” evening with Martlesham Brass in the New Year and also a spring concert, they are going on a short concert tour to “Elgar Country” in June 2020.

Since 2012, Geoff has conducted Beccles Choral Society, giving three concerts a year, with performances of many works in the choral repertoire, including Beethoven’s “Missa Solemnis”, and Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio”. In November this year he is to conduct them in a performance of “Messiah” and then the following May (2020), Mendelssohn’s “Elijah”.

Having been their accompanist for the last five years, he is delighted to have been appointed Musical Director of the Phoenix Singers in September 2018. Many future concerts are planned, including, next season, Britten’s “St Nicholas” (Dec 2019), Bach’s “St John Passion” (Easter 2020) and an Opera Night (July 2020).

As an accompanist, he has been part of a Trio and a Duo with Sarah Gallop, giving recitals throughout East Anglia. He also enjoys working and performing with Christina Johnson, who, until recently, was a leading soprano at Prague opera. They have a recital planned in Framlingham later this year.

In May this year, Geoff returned to Snape Maltings Concert Hall to perform Verdi’s “Requiem” with his three choirs and Lambeth Orchestra, London, with whom he has worked in the past.
